New Study Ranks Beadle Co. 39th in the State in Health Outcomes

A new study of health outcomes ranks Beadle County 39th among the 60 South Dakota counties that were included in the report.

Several factors were considered when compiling the rankings, including health behaviors such as tobacco use, diet & exercise, alcohol & drug use, and sexual activity, access to clinical care and the quality of that care, social and economic factors, and the physical environment.

The study found that 32% of Beadle County’s population qualifies as obese which is defined as having a BMI of 30% or higher. The study found that 31% of South Dakota’s total population is considered obese.

15% of adult Beadle County residents smoke, slightly below the statewide number of 18%.

Additionally, the study indicates that 15% of the county’s population is uninsured, while 12% of all South Dakota residents are without insurance.

Beadle County ranked 20th in clinical care, 41st in social and economic factors and 35th in physical environment.

The study was conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
