A new audit report released last week showed roughly $1.4 million remained missing after the deaths of a Platte couple and their four children in a murder-suicide in 2015.
It’s part of the investigation into the Platte-based Mid-Central Educational Cooperative and South Dakota’s GEAR UP college-readiness program.
Three people are charged in the case, and Attorney General Marty Jackley says the findings of this audit are significant as he prepares to go to trial. Jackley has said from the outset that this case revolved around money
The three defendants, Dan Guericke, Stephanie Hubers and Stacy Phelps pleaded not guilty to felony charges more than a year ago. They still have not gone to trial. Jackley says he hopes that happens this year
Phelps and Guericke allegedly helped Scott and Nicole Westerhuis avoid a potential audit.
