Dr. William Minor was elected as board chairman and three new board members were elected for Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) at the June board meeting.
Dr. Miner, who is an internal medicine physician at Tschetter & Hohm Clinic, has served on the hospital board since 2017 and previously served as a medical staff representative to the board. Laurie Solem was also elected as vice chairman. The board re-elected Doug Balvin as secretary and Tom Hansen and treasurer.
Elected for their first terms as at-large board members are Jill Luque, vice president and retail banking manager at American Bank & Trust, and Laura Willemssen, Huron Middle School Principal. Dr. Sara Castellanos, an OB/GYN at the Women’s Wellness Center was elected for her first term recommended by the HRMC medical staff. Paul Aylward, Huron Mayor, was re-elected to a second term. Tom Hansen, Beadle County Commissioner, and Dr. Nathan Loewen, a family medicine physician at New Life Family Medicine, were re-elected to third and final terms.
HRMC is a private, not-for-profit organization. When the ownership of Huron’s hospital passed from the Fransciscan Sisters to a locally-owned, private corporation (Huron Regional Medical Center, Inc.) in 1978, those involved in the purchase wanted to ensure Huron’s community hospital would be governed by a board of directors reflecting a broad-base of the community.
The volunteer board consists of three members recommended by the medical staff, one recommended by the City of Huron and one recommended by the Beadle County Commission. The other board members are elected at large. Each board member is elected for a three-year term and can serve up to three consecutive terms.
The property, funds, affairs and business of HRMC are managed by the board of directors, which is vested with the powers and authority conferred by the laws of South Dakota. More information about HRMC and the governing board is available at www.huronregional.org/about-us.
