If elected, Nelson would like to create an offender pay diversion program, similar to one started by Moore in Beadle County aimed at adult and juvenile offenders facing non-violent misdemeanor charges. Nelson is running as a Republican. Current Brookings County Deputy States Attorney Abigal Howard, a Democrat, is also running for the seat currently held by Clyde Calhoun, who recently announced he will retire at the end of his current term, having served nearly four decades as Brookings County States Attorney.
