National Farmers Union delegates, who met in Minneapolis, voiced their support for voluntary biotech labeling legislation being debated in the Senate. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says if mandatory labeling were to be passed it would create problems especially without country of origin labeling being in place.
He says an area of concern that’s drawn a lot of debate at the convention has been the President’s Clean Power Plan. Sombke says there are several problems with that that could hurt cooperatives in the Midwest.
Sombke says delegates also expressed their support for a strong renewable fuels standard and biofuels in general.
Sombke says in other business, delegates re elected Don Teske of Kansas as their National Vice President over challenger Tammy Basil of South Dakota.
