The Huron Police Dept. says an accident earlier this week is both a reminder to motorized bicycle riders that proper safety equipment and licensing is required and for motorists that more of these bikes will be on the road as the weather warms up.
At about 9:15 PM on Tuesday June 25th, a vehicle driven by a 17 year old male was traveling west on 9th ST SW.
A motorized bicycle being ridden by a 14 year old male was attempting to cross the street at about the same time. The vehicle swerved to avoid a collision but the bike struck the front door on the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
Officers investigating the accident scene said it appeared that the bike rider had failed to stop at the stop sign as required.
The bike rider sustained injuries and was transported to HRMC by the Huron Ambulance Service. No other information on the rider’s condition was available.
The public is reminded that these types of motorized bicycles fall into the moped category (engine sizes 50cc or less). This requires the operator to have a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance. Also, minors under the age of 18 are also required to wear helmets when operating the bike.
