Now there are six – six cities in South Dakota that have enacted ordinances which ban texting while driving. The Mitchell City Council on Monday night voted in favor of the ban. Mitchell Mayor Ken Tracy brought the issue back to the city council after the state legislature failed to pass a statewide ban on texting while driving. One of the discussion points on the issue was enforcement. Mitchell Public Safety Chief Lyndon Overweg was asked if the ordinance will be difficult to enforce.
Chief Overweg says the Mitchell ordinance makes texting while driving a primary offense.
The council voted 4-3 in favor of the texting while driving ban.
