Mitchell City Council Hears Lake Mitchell Clean-Up Plan

The Lake Mitchell Advisory Committee presented its plan for the cleanup of Lake Mitchell to the Mitchell City Council last night. The lake’s high algae content has triggered the city to recommend residents not swim or use the lake. The nearly $20 million plan consists of in-lake and near-lake treatments, which would include dredging, retention ponds, and hotspot identification, and watershed improvements. Lake Committee Chairman Joe Kippes told the council the entire plan was necessary to properly clean up the lake.

Mitchell Parks and Recreation Director Nathan Powell explained how far above their target the phosphorus level in the lake currently is.

Powell noted that potential grants could bring the cleanup cost down to under $16 million for the city. The council took no action on the lake plan last night.
