The Kansas man who put Huron on edge for most of a day in January has a date in court. A trial date for Charles Beeney has been set for May 28th. Beeney’s attorney David Wheeler says the Beadle County States Attorney’s Office has filed habitual offender information against his client. That could double the penalties against Beeney he is found guilty. Beeney has a history of escape and attempted escapes from jails and prisons in North Dakota. He is currently serving a two-year sentence out of Jerauld County for aggravated alluding, the reason he ended up in the jail in Huron. Beeney is accused of threatening to kill jailers with what he called a home-made gun, while on an overnight cleaning detail January eight. After prompting jailers to release him, Huron police gave chase on foot, but lost Beeney amongst freight cars in a railroad yard. He proceeded to steal a pick up truck from a rural residence and drove it to Sioux Falls where he was eventually apprehended. Court hearings are being held over the I-TV network to eliminate the need to transport Beeney between Huron and Sioux Falls. Beeney is charged with escape, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and theft.
