Ten South Dakotans will inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame this summer.
Among the inductees are Marilyn Hohm Hoyt of Huron, who is being recognized as a public service innovator. Hohm Hoyt has served her community and South Dakota in many capacities that have advanced economic and quality of life issues across the state and for the generations.
She began her long involvement with community and South Dakota with the Huron College in 1982 when she was elected to the Board of Trustees. She served for nearly 20 years and was board chairman when the school transitioned from a church-related institution to the private sector as a campaign was waged to save it. She also delivered the commencement address in three different decades, including 2005 at the final graduation from the school as it was closing its doors.
Hohm Hoyt was a founding member of the Spirit of Dakota Commission that has honored statewide Women Leaders who represent South Dakota in social, economic and cultural impacts.
She was the chair of several economic and quality of life projects such as, a wellness facility – now the Nordby Center, a $2 million renovation of the Crossroads Hotel, the Huron Event Center taskforce; and in 2013 served as fundraising and marketing chair, raising $4 million in six weeks to redevelop the former college campus into a first-class water park, city park and educational center.
She has also served on the South Dakota Board of Education, Christen-Hohm-Lusk Foundation Board, the Spirit of Dakota Award Society. and currently is a Board member for the South Dakota Community Foundation.
The Honors Ceremony will be held in Chamberlain/Oacoma, SD on September 7 and 8 and is open to the public. Tickets will go on sale June 1, and can be purchased on the Hall of Fame website at sdexcellence.org or by calling the Hall at 605.234.4216.
