Man Charged with Attempted Kidnapping at Menards in Watertown

A 35-year-old Canby, Minnesota man is being held in the Codington County Jail after attempting to take a child from his family.

Watertown Police responded to Menards on Sunday for a report of an employee who attempted to take a four-year-old child.

When police arrived, it was discovered that Peter Groenhoff, age 35, from Canby, Minnesota had approached and picked up the child without the parent’s permission. When confronted by the child’s father Groenhoff began walking quickly away from the child’s family. The father pursued the man and told him to stop. Groenhoff refused the request and was chased to an employee break area. The father cornered Peter and forced him to release the child.

Menards’s staff intervened to ensure Groenhoff remained secure until police arrived.

Groenhoff was arrested and charged with Second Degree Kidnapping. Assistant Police Chief Tim Toomey says this is an ongoing investigation and that Groenhoff is currently being held on a $20,000 cash only bond.
