A Huron man, who pleaded guilty to grand theft June 17th for his role in the staged armed robbery of a Huron gas station, is sentenced to 26 days in jail. However, 27-year-old Sidney Malone, Jr. has the prospect of four years in the State Penitentiary hanging over his head for the next 18 months. Judge Jon Erickson suspended a four-year prison term for Malone and placed him on probation for a year and a half. Malone will be serving a 30-day jail term at the Beadle County Jail. Four days of that being credit for time served. Malone’s attorney Doug Kludt told Erickson his client is a “gentle giant” who has no history of prior felonies or crimes of violence. Kludt says Malone has been cooperative with law enforcement and says it was co-defendant, 26-year-old Donnell Williams who hatched the plot to pretend to hold up Malone while the two made off with over 31-hundred dollars from the North Star Convenience store January 29th. Beadle County Deputy States Attorney Dan Nelson told Erickson they expect Malone to continue to work with law enforcement as Williams approaches a trial on grand theft and commission of a felony with a firearm charges. Malone said on his own behalf he regrets going along with the plan and apologized for his actions. He says he wants to pay back what he took. A jury trial for Williams, of Cavour is set for July 31st.
