Library Challenges Patrons to “Build a Better World”

“Build a Better World” is the theme of Huron Public Library’s 2017 Summer Reading Program. Patrons are invited to try something new this summer: at home, in the community, throughout the country, and around the globe. Read a new book, try a new craft, meet new people, and learn about new places. Registration begins on May 30 with the program running June 5 through July 26. A celebration of building a better world will be July 28 with a pool party at Splash Central.

Reading incentives will be given throughout the summer to encourage people to read. Participants must read 500 minutes to qualify for the pool party celebration at the end of the program. Patrons who read 2000 minutes will qualify for the grand prizes, gold prizes, silver prizes and bronze prizes. This year’s grand prizes are a laptop for adults, $200.00 Visa credit card for teens, two bicycles for children, two scooters for children and one tricycle for wee readers.

Children ages 0 to 5th grade will keep track of the minutes they read by reading logs or via Read Squared computer program. There will be crafts, activities, movies, story times, Tween Day, special events (Stop, Drop, and Read!, Family Nights, Legos) all helping them to Build a Better World.

Area teens, grades 6 through 12, are encouraged to participate in helping their community through reading and giving programs. Special events for teens include Books-R-Us, Slippery Slide Kickball, Gaming, Rummage Sale Flip, movies and crafts. Similar to the children Teens will have to read 500 minutes to qualify for the end party and 2000 minutes for the grand prizes. The teens will compile and send care packages for the 153rd Unit.

Adult, 18 years and older, will also be challenged to Build a Better World during the program. They will participate in games, puzzles, brainteasers, family activities, adult craft night, book discussions, movies and a children’s clothing swap. Patrons may bring clean, gently used children’s clothing and accessories in good condition on Thursday, June 8 between 2-6 pm, and Friday, June 9 between 3-5 pm. They will receive a receipt for the total number items donated, that they can use on Saturday, June 10 from 10 am – 1 pm to shop!

Adults will also participate in Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit organization that collects, packs, and ships care packages to the military, veterans, and first responders. They will be meeting weekly throughout the summer to knit/crochet scarves and hats for a military care package.

Suggested items to swap include socks, shoes, coats, pants, tops, dresses, and baby blankets. There is no limit on the number of items brought to swap. Items that do not require a ticket will be available at a free table. Leftover items will be donated to local charities.
