Staring out the 3rd floor window of Vince Foley’s courtroom, John LeGrand sat silently as members of Ricardo “RJ” Hein’s family pleaded with the judge to give the Sturgis man the maximum penalty he could of 40 years. Foley did so, giving LeGrand 40 years in prison. Hein’s father Rick told LeGrand he ambushed his son and said quote “Your going to hell because God doesn’t accept people like you.” endquote. Hein’s brother Ross had a difficult time talking about how much he missed his brother and the chances they would have had to be uncles together. Hein’s mother Becky went before the court and said she finally understood what a mothers love was, and could feel what RJ felt as LeGrand shot Hein four times. When asked if he had anything to say LeGrand quietly said “No Sir” Foley himself said, for him, what made Hein’s killing not self defense was the two additions shots LeGrand made after Hein attempted to retreat from LeGrand’s mobile home. Beadle County States Attorney Mike Moore said quote “We know RJ was leaving when the fourth shot was fired.” Foley when on to say quote. “You (LeGrand) cut a good deal, you saved their family and you saved your family. LeGrand will be eligible for parole. He will be transported to Meade County to deal with drug charges there that got his bond revoked in the Hein shooting. LeGrand is also responsible for court costs and court appointed attorneys fees.
