The South Dakota Legislature meets in a special session today to take care of three bills—two dealing with collection of sales taxes from online purchases and the other making an adjustment to the inauguration date for the next governor.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard says online retailers who don’t have a physical presence in the state are only required to collect and remit sales tax if certain thresholds are met.
Daugaard says its difficult to guess how much money will come into the state from online sales tax collection.
Daugaard says he’s aiming for a Nov. 1, 2018, implementation date for some collections.
The Governor is proposing a March 1, 2019, start date for collection of online taxes from marketplace type websites.
