The City of Huron has hired outside legal council to help the city deal with the Pagel/Swanson property in southeast Huron. The Huron City Commission also formally accepted the parcel from Beadle County during a brief executive session Monday night.. Last week, the Beadle County Commission declared the land surplus and asked Huron Mayor Paul Aylward during a joint meeting of the two governing bodies, if the City would be open to accepting the land via transfer, to which the city agreed. Developer Pagel and Swenson failed to pay property taxes on the large piece of land situated between Coborn’s and the First United Methodist Church, prompting Beadle County to file a tax deed on the land. The property failed to sell during a recent Beadle County land sale in Decmeber. The City of Huron has approximately one-point-five million dollars invested in the land in assessments for water and sewer lines, streets, curbs and gutters. The Commission did not disclose the name of the lawyer or law firm retained for the work on the Pagel/Swanson property in the motion made Monday night.
