Lawmaker Says Non-Meandered Compromise Bill is Working

South Dakota legislators met in special session in June to pass a bill that reopened a number of lakes that had flooded onto private land. That came after a Supreme Court decision over jurisdiction.

Representative Lee Qualm of Platte chaired the committee that came up with the compromise bill.

He says it appears the plan is working

Qualm says it appears the Game, Fish & Parks Department is more willing to work with landowners now

The compromise bill will expire at the end of next June. Qualm says he will call the committee back together later this month to come up with a plan

Public access to those lakes was barred until the legislature changed the law.
