Jordan Sylaart Sentenced In Child Sex Crimes Case

An 18-year-old rural Cavour man accused of sexual contact with children at a home day care operated by his mother has been sentenced for his crime, but will not be going to the State Penitentiary. Jordan Sylaart pleaded guilty in adult court to a count of sexual contact with a child under 16. A first degree rape charge was dismissed as part of a plea deal. Sylaart was sentenced to three years of prison April 19th and fined one thousand dollars, but was granted a suspended execution of sentence. A file in juvenile court will be dismissed.  Court documents on file with the Beadle County Clerk of Courts office indicate because of the suspended execution of sentence, Sylaart must spend 90 days in the Beadle County Regional Corrections Center. Sylaart is on probation for three years. If he commits a crime within the three year probation period he may be ordered to serve the state prison time. Other conditions of the suspended execution of sentence include no unsupervised contact with children under 16, the payment of counseling for the vitcim’s and work release while in jail. Sylaart’s father Fred is also charged in connection to the case. The elder Sylaart’s case is still pending. Due to a conflict with his current attorney, Fred Sylaart has filed for a new court appointed attorney. David Wheeler has been selected to represent Sylaart. A trial date has not been set.
