Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are being to look in to requests for assistance made by suspended Huron police chief Doug Schmitt. An official who did not leave a name, returned a phone call Thursday afternoon saying they did not have an answer as to why requests by Schmitt went without a response. Peformance Radio has made a formal request with ICE to look into Schmitt’s request to have ICE agents make compliance checks of two Huron area business that Schmitt claims have been hiring and have on the payroll, illegal immigrants. A copy of Schmitt’s testimony before a legislative committee has been supplied to ICE by Performance Radio, so the officials can look into the Chief’s claims. Schmitt, a 32-year veteran of the Huron police department has been placed on administrative leave while the Huron City Commission conducts an investigation of Schmitt’s comments. Schmitt has been chief for ten years. Shawn Neudauer a Public Affairs Officer with the Immigration and Naturalization Service in St. Paul, Minnesota said Wednesday afternoon officials were familiar with the bill Schmitt was testifying on but unaware of the specifics of Schmitt’s testimony.
