Howard-based Horizon Health held a grand opening for it’s James Valley Community Health Center in Huron Thursday. C-E-O John Mengenhausen says Horizon has applied for federal grants for a number of years to help bankroll the project. The James Valley Community Health Center was one of 67 projects selected out of 800 applications from across the county. The facility at the Huron Mall is 12-thousand square feet with 12 exam rooms. Horizon Health Care has combined lease agreements with the Huron Mall to stay in the former Osco Drug location for 30 years. Huron Mayor David McGirr says the addition of the Horizon Health to Huron will be not only good for the Huron Mall, which like many malls, has a number of empty stores, but will have a significant economic impact for Huron. He says other groups have contacted officials about use of the Mall since the announcement of Horizon, coming to the mall. McGirr says regional health care is important to Huron, with many people who had to travel up to 75 miles out of Huron to get affordable health care, and now receive it in town. Horizon as a Community Health Center will be able to provide health care services to those with little or no health insurance and will accept clients with full insurance coverage. The clinic also has full-time Spanish and Karen (ka-RIN) translators to assist Huron’s growing ethnic populations.
