PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – Federal grants of $270,000 will go toward six South Dakota projects geared toward improving science and mathematics instruction in middle and high schools.
South Dakota State University, Black Hills State University and the Sanford Underground Research Facility are involved as are K-12 schools in Waubay, Chamberlain, White River, Newell, Hoven, Bennett County, Todd County, Huron and Chamberlain.
The Title II grants from the U.S. Department of Education pair university science, math, and education faculty with teachers and administrators from high-need school systems for specialized summer workshops and follow-up activities. Those efforts will lead to lesson plans in math and science throughout the school year.
About 125 teachers from across South Dakota will participate. Grant amounts for the six projects range from $29,000 to $50,000.
