Two recent car accidents in closed road construction zones in Huron have the Huron police reminding residents to avoid work areas if you don’t live near them. Sergeant Brandon Neitzert says officers will be stepping up enforcement of city ordinances and state statues pertaining to vehicles going around road closed signs in construction zones. Closed roads are not intended to permit the flow of thru traffic. Motorists who cause an accident on a closed stretch of road may be cited in addition to their presence on a closed road contributing to accident fault. The repair costs for any damage to freshly pave streets can be assessed back to the driver who did the damage. Work on 9th Street should be done by the middle to end of June. Crews will then work on widening Frank Avenue approximately one foot on each side. Any violation of South Dakota Codified Law 32-28-10 or city ordinance 16-dot-08-dot-zero-ten is a Class 2 misdemeanor that could net you a 125-dollar fine and 30 days in jail
