Authorities have released more details surrounding an incident in the 600 block of Idaho Ave. yesterday.
Early Wednesday morning, around 12:35 AM, a man came to the Huron Police Department to report an assault. The victim stated that he had been struck in the head with a glass bowl by the 35-year-old suspect. The victim told police that the man had access to several weapons inside of his residence, including pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, and .50 caliber rifle. The victim further stated that he feared the suspect might be a danger to himself or police.
Based upon the statements made by the victim, officers decided not to enter the residence. The decision was made to wait and attempt contact the suspect the following morning. Police state that at no time did they believe the suspect was a threat to the general public.
Later that morning, authorities learned that the suspect had not shown up for work. Officers determined that he was likely still in the basement of the residence. At that time the department activated it’s Special Response Team.
The street in front of the residence at 645 Idaho Ave. SE. was closed and neighbors immediately surrounding the suspects home were temporarily evacuated. Once the area was secured, Special Response Team members began breaching basement windows and attempting to locate the suspect’s position within the residence.
After gaining entry to the basement, team members discovered that the suspect was deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
