Three Huron Police officers are taking on additional roles in the department according to Police Chief Gary Will. Will says Captain Dan Kight is being assigned as the department training coordinator. Kight will develop a training matrix for every position in the department, obtain instructors for mandated training and arrange regional training opportunities to be held in Huron to assist other agencies in the area. Officer Mark Johnson will become the department’s Community Programs and Volunteer Services Coordinator. Chief Will says Johnson has experience in such programs from his time studying at the University of North Dakota and with the Grand Forks Police Department. Johnson is a DARE instructor and works with the Certified Alcohol Sales Training program. He will be responsible for setting up programs like a Citizen’s Police Academy. The final officers with extra roles are Sergeant Brandon Neitzert and Officer Cory Borg. Nietzert will become the departments Public Information Officer and Borg the assistant PIO. Neitzert plans on reaching out more to the media and the community to provide more timely and better information than has been available in the past.
