For the second time in as many weeks Huron police have made arrests following a search warrant for drugs. Forty-eight year olds Darwin and Deloris Vanoverschelde were arrested by police Friday after the execution of a search warrant on a Southeast Huron home. Both Vanoverscheldes are charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, keeping a place for the use or sale of a controlled substance and violation of a drug-free school zone. Huron police seized methamphetamine durg paraphernalia and a large sum of cash during the search. This latest arrest marks the second time in two weeks Huron police have seized “felony amounts” of illegal drugs, enforcing the increasing need for additional tools to help fight drug use in Huron. A South Dakota Highway Patrol K-9 unit was requested by local authorities but was unavailable at the time. The Huron City Commission has set aside funding to implement a K-9 program for the H-P-D, however additional funds are needed to ensure the program moves forward. The 2012 Leadership Huron class has offered to help with fundraising efforts to ensure the success of the program. For information on how to assist with support for the K-9 program you can contact Leadership Huron by calling 352-0000. Court appearances for the Vanoverscheldes are set for Monday. Court appearances for six men charged after the narcotic search warrant executed last week are set for Wednesday.
