The Huron Police Department is alerting the community and surrounding areas about a phone scam. The department has recently received reports that local area residents are receiving calls from scammers that are identifying themselves as HPD officers.
During the conversation the scammer notifies the grandparent that their grandchild is in trouble and needs help. The scammer then tells the grandparent that they will need a large sum of money wired to them in order to clear things up. Finally, the scammer tells the grandparent that they are under a “gag order” and they are not allowed to discuss the situation with anyone, not even family members.
Those that have reported the scam report that the caller ID shows that the number calling is from out of state and not from the Huron area as claimed.
A Huron Police Department officer or supervisor will not ask you for money or to wire money if someone has broken the law. The HPD does not collect bail money or fines from anyone for any reason. If you are contacted by someone identifying themselves as law enforcement using this scam or something similar, DO NOT SEND OR WIRE ANY MONEY.
If you have any questions please contact the Huron Police Department.
