Maternity unit staff and physicians at Huron Regional Medical Center have kicked off the planned $3 million renovation project on the third floor of the main hospital.
Rebecca Jones, RN-BSN, CLC, and patient experience coordinator for labor and delivery at HRMC. Says the hospital has learned from patient feedback that their current labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms were a good size, but that more of them were needed. Jones says the new rooms will include a large whirlpool tub and a walk-in shower.
Other new features include a family area, larger televisions, more storage for personal belongings and gifts and updated décor throughout the unit. A total of four new suites will be added.
This family focus extends beyond to the suites and family waiting area, where older siblings have their own space to play. Additionally, an open nourishment area provides guests with easy access to water, coffee and snacks. For mothers with infants who may need to remain in the nursery for observation, the hospital is including privacy rooms for enhanced bonding.
Jones says renovations are expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
The project is planned in two or three phases to reduce interruptions to patient care.
