HRMC Board Votes to Discontinue Local Blood Collection

The Huron Regional Medical Center’s Board of Directors has voted to discontinue local blood collection and partner with LifeServe Blood Center.

The hospital has worked with the non-profit blood center since 2005 for supplemental blood supplies. LifeServe is now the sole supplier of all blood and blood products to Huron Regional Medical Center.

Vice-President of Marketing and Communications at HRMC Kim Rieger says with the retirement of blood donor coordinator Donna Leichtenberg the hospital had the opportunity to reevaluate how it collected blood.

Rieger says HRMC was the only hospital in the state that still maintained a hospital-based blood bank.

Rieger says the decision was based on many factors.

She says the hospital hopes to hold monthly blood drives.

Rieger says there is another benefit to moving to this new model.

LifeServe Blood Center will hold its first blood drive on Tuesday, February 20 between 11:30 – 5 PM at Huron Regional Medical Center.
