The Huron Police Department is holding the first of two nationwide prescription drug take back events in 2014. The U-S Drug Enforcement Agency works with law enforcement agencies across the county in April and October each year with collecting unused, unneeded or outdated prescription drugs, to safely dispose of the medications and prevent the abuse of prescription and controlled substance medications. Saturday’s prescription drug take back is the eighth one Huron Police have done in the last three years. In that time nearly 533 pounds of prescription drugs have been taken back by police. Last October 159 pounds were collected. Nationwide nearly 324 tons of prescription drugs were safely disposed of. The collection tomorrow will run from 10 AM to 2 PM at the south entrance of the Huron Municipal Building. Needles, syringes and liquids are not accepted during the take back, however patches and pills are. If you miss out on the chance to take part in Saturday’s event, the police department has a 24-hour-day safe secure collection box available for prescription drug disposal located near the dispatch window at the Huron Municipal Building.
