House Rejects Bill to Add Clergy to List of Mandatory Reporters of Child Abuse, Neglect

The South Dakota House narrowly rejected a bill Monday designed to add clergy to the list of mandatory reporters for suspected child abuse or neglect.

State Representative Lance Koth of Mitchell voted “no”.

Representative Erin Healy is the bill’s prime sponsor. She says it would help protect children further from possible abuse and neglect.

The measure was amended to exclude church staff and ultimately failed by a 34-33 vote.
