The South Dakota House of Representatives has approved a bill that would give pay raises to lawmakers.
This would be the first pay incresae for legislators in 20 years.
This bill is different from an earlier measure approved by the House that would refer the pay hike to voters.
Minnehaha County Represenative Chris Karr says voters depend on their elected officials to make these kinds of decisions.
Pennington County Representative Kristen Conzet says many of her constituents have no idea how much legislators are paid.
The bill links lawmaker compensation to the state’s median household income, which would mean a 70 percent pay raise.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
