This year’s Leadership Huron class blew past it’s goal of 10-thousand dollars to raise money for a drug-detecting canine for the Huron Police Department. The Dueling for a Dog dueling pianos fundraiser on March 23rd netted over 20-thousand dollars. After expenses the Huron Police Department was presented with a check for 15-thousand-937 dollars, and change. The event sold out all 500 seats available. The donation to the police department will help augment other expenses like a vehicle kennel and body armor for the dog, training aids and uniform needs. Help for the drug dog program has also been made available by Jensen Feed Store of Huron. They have donated a year’s worth of food to the program. The Huron Police Department plans to purchase the dog this summer just prior to when newly appointed K-9 officer Derek Layher will attending training with and become certified with the dog. The donation was presented to Police Chief Gary Will Jr. Thursday
