GF&P Official Says Better Communication Needed on Non-Meandered Waters Issue

Twenty five lakes in South Dakota are “off limits” to fishing until the Legislature decides what the appropriate the appropriate recreational uses are on those bodies of water.

The lakes are considered non-meandered, which means through years of wet cycles, they’ve grown to encroach onto private land.

But South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Regional Manager Scott Lindgren says the court ruling might be having an affect on meandered bodies of water as well—where fishing is perfectly legal.

He cites one instance he observed on Tuesday as he was on a bus tour with legislators who are studying the water access issue

He says the non-meandered lakes that are off-limits to fishing are clearly posted…

Today, an interim legislative committee studying the water access issue holds another public hearing in Aberdeen.
