The Huron City Commission approved a bid by Freddy’s Electric of Huron for a generator to be placed at the city’s waste water plant. City Engineer Mike Wever says the bid price for the back-up unit was over 159-thousand dollars. The estimate was 70-thousand dollars….
The discrepancy in actual versus budget price led to raised eyebrows from some Commissioners like Mark Robish…
Wever figures the enclosure around the generator accounts for approximately 40-percent of the unit’s cost but is worth the investment for something that will last multiple decades. Commissioner Doug Kludt wanted to know if the city really needed the unit now…
Wever says the building-sized power producing machine is important because the city’s raw sewage needs to be pumped under the James River to the waste water plant. If the power were to go out in a storm, the city would have a short window to keep sewage moving in a safe direction away from the river.
