Monday night was a long one for the Huron City Commission, five variance requests took up nearly the first hour of the Commission’s meeting. A request by Sherman Gose and Steve Gohn was denied by the Commission meeting as the Board of Adjustments. Five neighbors to the project spoke out against building saying they thought the building would lower property values and did not want a commercial style building near there homes. One resident asked why Gose and Gohn couldn’t put the building on their own properties. Another suggested the build a house, so the proposed storage garage would fit the purpose of the areas zoning rules. Because he had a connection to the project Mayor Dave McGirr deferred chairing the item to Commissioner Jan Manolis. Manolis noted that similar projects on the same spot were denied in 1996 and 2006. The other four variances were approved, some with restrictions set forth by Hearing Examiner Rita Saugstad. One of the variances was approved as presented.
