A film that was shot in South Dakota by an independent Scottish filmmaker is holding its own against the Hollywood blockbusters.
Neither Wolf Nor Dog, based on the novel of the same name by Kent Nerburn, focuses on a road trip undertaken by a white author and two Native American men. The film has done well not only in South Dakota theaters but across the Northwest and Vancouver.
Director Steven Lewis Simpson believes having a unique story to tell has helped his project at the box office.
One of the stars of the movie is Dave Bald Eagle, who was born on the Cheyenne River Reservation and passed away last year at the age of 97. Bald Eagle’s character Dan, a Lakota elder, plays a pivotal role in the movie.
In addition to working within a small budget, Simpson also made due with limited manpower; shooting the film with a crew of only two people. He says this presented challenges but also had its advantages.
The film opens Friday at Huron Luxury Cinema after successful runs in Mitchell and Chamberlain.
