On Saturday afternoon, at about 5:12 PM, Brookings County Sheriff, Brookings Police and Brookings Ambulance were summoned to the 4200 block of Western Avenue South for a report of a fight and stabbing.
On arrival, a 37-year-old male was found to have a single stab wound to the lower abdomen. The other party involved in the fight, a 15-year-old male, had fled the scene, but a short time later presented himself to law enforcement at the Brookings County Sheriffs Office.
The victim was later identified as Brookings resident Justin Proctor, who was taken to the Brookings Hospital by ambulance and then airlifted to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls. Several hours later, Proctor succumbed to his injuries and died. The 15-year-old male was interviewed by law enforcement, examined at the Brookings Hospital for injuries sustained in the fight, and then released.
The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy for Proctor is scheduled for Monday morning. The 15-year-old juvenile’s name will not be released at this time. The State’s Attorney’s Office will be making a decision as to whether or not there will be charges in the matter. Further investigation will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota DCI.
