South Dakota Farmers Union members who have organized a petition drive say they already have over 3,000 signatures out of the 27,741 they need to place their measure on the 2016 ballot. Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says they’re seeking to change the way legislative redistricting is done in the state.
Sombke says the measure they’re working on, if put on the ballot and approved would give independent voters a say in the process.
Sombke says anyone wanting more information about their redistricting measure can go to the South Dakota Farmers Union’s website.
Sombke says they have until November 8 of this year to gather the needed signatures and file them with the Secretary of State’s office in Pierre. He says their goal however is to have them all collected by the end of October.
