Eight agricultural educators from across South Dakota have been recognized as finalists for the Golden Owl Award. Dan Tonak of Willow Lake and Susan Roudabush of Ethan are among the finalists.

The South Dakota FFA Foundation and Nationwide are presenting the award to honor outstanding contributions to agricultural education. Nominations for the award were accepted from September through December 2024 from students, parents, fellow teachers, and community members.

The finalists represent eight districts across the state:

  • District 1: Sara Colombe, Milbank
  • District 2: Dan Tonak, Willow Lake
  • District 3: Nathan Knutson, Viborg-Hurley
  • District 4: Susan Roudabush, Ethan
  • District 5: Austin Bishop, Belle Fourche
  • District 6: Sarah McClure, Gettysburg
  • District 7: Josh Christiansen, Harrisburg
  • District 8: Reed Johnson, Philip

Each finalist received a plaque and a $500 check to support their educational programs. They will now move on to the final selection stage. The overall South Dakota Ag Educator of the Year will be announced later, earning an additional $3,000 and the Golden Owl Award trophy.

“Our teachers are the foundation of the FFA,” said Sandy Osterday, SD FFA Foundation Board President. “They inspire our members every day… We are so thankful Nationwide recognizes the valuable work our teachers do and provides this award.”

Nationwide created the Golden Owl Award to recognize and support agricultural educators. The program operates in 13 states. “As the need grows for more ag educators across the nation, we are proud to thank and honor these hardworking agricultural teachers for their dedication,” said Brad Liggett, president of Agribusiness at Nationwide.

In addition to the individual awards, Nationwide is donating $5,000 to the South Dakota FFA Foundation to support the growth of students, teachers, and advisors.
