A Huron man has been cited with three violations following a Monday accident involving a Huron police car. South Dakota Highway Patrol Sergeant Frank Krumm says Sean Kelley was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, no insurance and no driver’s license. Krumm says the initial information from the investigation of the accident indicates Kelley was eastbound on Third Street in Huron when he reached the intersection of Third and Kansas Avenue. Huron Police Department K-9 Officer Derek Layher was southbound on Kansas responding to an emergency call with both lights and sirens engaged. At the time of the accident, Kelley’s light was green and Layher’s was red. The impact caused Kelley’s car to roll onto a sidewalk and into a building southeast of the intersection. Kelley received serious, but non-life threatening injuries and was treated and released from Huron Regional Medical Center. Layher and his K-9 partner Cody were not injured. The Huron Police Department’s K-9 program has not been sidelined by the loss of it’s K-9 transport vehicle. Huron Public Safety Director Gary Will, Jr. says Layher and Cody are using a back-up cruiser that was the department’s original K-9 unit and is still fitted for K-9 use. Will said there is no time frame on when the damaged K-9 S-U-V can or will be returned to service.
