Drinking Immunity Bill Moves Forward In Pierre

A State Senate Committee approved a measure Thursday that would grant limited immunity for someone illegally consuming alcohol but aiding a person in the same situation whose life is in danger.  State Senator Larry Tidemann of Brookings is the bill’s sponsor.  He says a group of college students encouraged the legislation.  He says it’s not designed to encourage alcohol consumption….

 Hughes County States Attorney Kelly Marnette opposed the measure….

State Senator Mike Vehle was also skeptical.  He’s concerned about the number of times someone may use it……

The Senate Judiciary committee passed the bill on a six to one vote.  The full Senate will consider it.
