Workforce development was a major theme in Governor Dennis Daugaard’s final state of the state address Tuesday.
The governor spoke about what the state has achieved in that area but Senator Jim White says the governor also challenged lawmakers to continue to improve workforce development
Daugaard talked about the Career Launch program which would extend job shadowing and apprenticeship programs to high school students.
Rep. Bob Glanzer says in some case the state doesn’t have an employment problem but an unemployable problem.
Rep. Roger Chase says the interstate licensing compact with North Dakota, Montana, Colorado, and Nebraska that Daugaard spoke about could help bring more professionals back to South Dakota.
The governor also talked about the non-meandered waters issue. Chase says he expects to see several bills dealing with the issue this session.
Daugaard would like to see lawmakers extend the sunset date of the current law from June of this year to June of 2021.
