A morning train derailment in the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Huron rail yard blocked a state highway and main thoroughfare for a time Wednesday. The 122-car train was coming into Huron from the east when the lead locomotive jumped the tracks around nine-A-M, causing the train to stall out, blocking State Highway 37 known locally as Dakota Avenue. The front trucks of a second locomotive also derailed. The Canadian Pacific’s Kevin Hrysak says because the train was blocking Dakota Avenue, crews worked vigilantly to re-rail the second locomotive and shove back the remainder of the train. The rail cars were cleared from the Dakota Avenue crossing around noon. C-P crews will be in Huron this afternoon to place the lead locomotive back on the tracks. The lead locomotive derailed near the South Dakota Wheat Growers Fertilizer Facility. The incident is not impacting local main line operations The cause of the derailment is under investigation
