PIERRE, SD – South Dakota’s big-game hunters will get an extra chance to take some deer with the arrival of the new year. The East River and West River deer seasons both reopen from January 1 through January 9. All unfilled tags from the regular seasons are valid for antlerless deer only.
The antelope season also reopens for the same time period, with all unfilled tags valid only for doe or kid antelope. Tom Kirschenmann, chief of terrestrial resources for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department, says the January seasons are an important part of the state’s deer management program. He says both hunters and landowners like the antlerless season.
