SIOUX FALLS, SD – The South Dakota Aeronautics Commission and Department of Transportation are installing new systems that will give pilots up to-the-minute weather information to enhance safety. Nineteen Automated Weather Observing Systems, or Super AWOS, have been installed at small and medium-sized airports, according to the Department of Transportation. An additional ten systems will be installed this year in the communities of Bison, Canton, De Smet, Faulkton, Flandreau, Highmore, Martin, Platte, Sisseton and Wall. Aeronautics Commission Chairman Larry Vetterman says the AWOS will increase the state’s coverage for weather reporting, which is critical for safety. The observation systems are being funded with aviation users fees.
