The Senate Judiciary Committee has killed a bill that would have prevented people who are seriously mentally ill from receiving the death penalty.
The measure was sent to the 41st day on a 5-2 vote.
The bill is co-sponsored by two former judges. On the Senate side, it’s Arthur Rusch of Vermillion. He says this would cover only a few, seriously mentally ill people.
The bill was opposed by Attorney General Marty Jackley.
The measure had earlier passed 45-20 in the House.
