The Huron City Commission took their Monday night meeting on the road for a field trip of sorts to discuss controlling water near the city’s frequently flooded municipal pool and new baseball field. The first stop was the parking lot of the swimming pool, which itself mirrored a pool for most of the summer. The main idea for keeping water out of the pools parking area involves the construction of a dike from the west side of the pool, to the South and have it somehow join to the dike along the James River in Memorial Park. The dike would be 55 to 60 feet across at the base and approximately 10 feet across on the top. The sidewalk and lighting that currently sits in the area would be moved to the top of the dike. The dike itself would cost around 40-thousand dollars with the sidewalk and lighting another 74-thousand, bringing the project to around 134-thousand dollars and the city would like to see something in place yet this year so it would be ready for the spring thaw. McGirr is worried flooding could be bad next spring because the James River is still very high for this late in the year.
