The Huron City Commission will explore hiring a temporary city attorney in order to allow outgoing City Attorney Gerry Kaufman the chance to get started with his new job at the Associated School Boards of South Dakota. Kaufman says he received an e-mail from his new employer wondering about the status of his request to be released early. Huron Human Resource Director Pat Schmidt says they have put the feelers out…
Kaufman says it may take up to 60 days for an attorney to close out any active files before they could take on the duties of city attorney, even on a short term basis. The City of Huron signed an intergovernmental agreement with the Beadle County States Attorneys office that expired at the end of last year that allowed for the County Deputy States Attorney to act as an Assistant City Attorney primarily for magistrate court. Mayor Paul Aylward says there are a few local attorneys with some experience with municipal law. Kaufman’s last day had been scheduled for September 27th. With the Commission’s approval Monday night, Kaufman’s last day is now set for September, 10th.
