Gayle Kludt, executive director of People’s Transit, gave a semi-annual to the city Monday night.
Kludt says People’s Transit has been able to significantly reduce the amount of non-revenue hours vs revenue hours. Non-revenue hours refers to the time buses spend on the road with no riders on board.
For the first half of 2019, revenue miles made up 91 & 1/2 % of People’s Transit’s total miles.
Kludt says they have been able to accomplish that reduction in non-revenue miles by parking the buses between rides. This also cuts down on fuel consumption.
Kludt estimates non-revenue miles were in the neighborhood of 15% prior to making the change.
Kludt says People’s Transit served an average of 316 people per day in the first six months of the year. Fuel costs were over $34,000 for the same period.
Recently, the Business Improvement District approved paying the 20% local match on a seven-passenger mini-van. The federal government pays the remaining 80%. Also, Kludt says another wheelchair accessible mini-van has been ordered.

The commission approved awarding the bid for Huron Event Center carpet replacement to Anderson Furniture in the amount of $102,329.17.
The commission also approved a variance request by Dan Kight
to construct a detached garage at 975 Illinois SW, which will be 452.25 square feet over the code.
A public hearing was held to transfer a 2019 retail on-sale liquor license from Ground Round Grill & Bar, Spirit of the Prairie Inc, to Greater Huron Development Corporation.
