Four-legged residents were on the agenda last night as the city received its semi-annual report from the Beadle County Humane Society.
Director Kim Krueger says from January through June of this year, the Humane Society adopted out 115 animals, returned 61 to owners and euthanized 77 animals, with 23 of those being injured wildlife. Currently, there are 11 dogs and 92 cats housed at the shelter.
Recently, Krueger says her agency has had an increase in calls to remove bats from homes. She reminds residents that while they will remove bats, they won’t go looking for the animals if they aren’t visible.
Krueger says overall wildlife calls are on the rise. She encourages residents not to attempt to intervene when wild animals appear in danger.
With the State Fair coming up in a few weeks, Krueger reminds residents that dogs are not allowed on the fairgrounds. Leaving a pet behind in the vehicle is not an option.
Also last night, the commission approved 1st reading of an ordinance to rezone 450 4th Street NE, the former Sibley Motors property, from General Business District to General Industrial District. The property was recently purchased by Basin Electric. It will use it for office and warehouse space.
